What is unraveled?
What does UN- mean to you?
The prefix UN- has been in my head since the idea for this magazine was sparked. I keep thinking of the underrepresented, unseen, untold, uncared for…every UN- word has circled my mind for weeks. The definition of the prefix UN- has three meanings:

1. Not
2. Deprived of
3. Released from

The three meanings are all so diverse with negative and positive connotations. I could not get the last meaning out of my head, “released from,” and the word “Unraveled” stuck out to me. What does it mean to be unraveled? How does it feel? What does it look like? How do human beings get released from something through unraveling? What picks us apart piece by piece until we are undone? Art. It unravels us as people, connects us as human beings, creates a space for understanding, and ultimately provides emotional, mental, and physical release. Welcome to unraveled: a magazine for people of every color, religion, gender, and identity to unravel through art and become tied together through humanity.
Submission Guidlines
The main theme of this magazine is what does un- mean to you? There will be three sections of the magazine and you are welcome to submit to one section or all three. The three sections will be:

Not.

not good enough. not pretty enough. not light enough. not dark enough. not happy enough.

These are phrases people have been told or have even told themself. The section titled Not will look different for everyone, feel different, and sound different. Write, draw, speak, dance, make etc. what Not is for you.

Deprived.

"suffering a severe and damaging lack of basic material and cultural benefits."

air, water, representation, equality, rights, food, and money are some broad things I think of when I hear deprived.
What can be deprived? Who is deprived or what? A section on deprivation in every form.

Released.

finally, what is set free? who or what set it free? what does being released look like or mean?

These three categories are guidelines and broad, so let your imagination and creativity take over. If you aren't sure what category your work could belong in, do not stress it and submit anyway! I believe in uncensored work, so any theme, topic, language, or images are welcome as long as they are not hate speech of any kind. There will be trigger warnings provided for the magazine if needed.
